Promo video in 10 minutes with ChatGPT and Pexels

A finished promo in your brand colors in about 10 minutes, and nothing renders until you approve the storyboard.

A short promo video is the ad format every platform asks for now: Reels, TikTok, Shorts, the video slot in Meta and Google ads. It is also the thing a small business puts off, because making even 20 seconds of it means an editor, a timeline, stock footage, captions, colors that match the website, and an export setting nobody remembers.

I now make them in ChatGPT, with free footage from Pexels and no editor. The result is a captioned 9:16 video in my own brand colors, ready to upload as an ad. From opening Pexels to downloading the finished file takes me about 10 minutes.

This is what ChatGPT made on my first try, for this site. The finding shows every step and message that produced it, so you can make one for your business.

Why a 20-second promo video is slow to make by hand

The slow part is not the cutting. It is the decisions around it: which clips, which 3 seconds of each clip, what the captions say, which color the text is so it reads over a bright shot, where the logo goes so Instagram’s buttons do not cover it, and then the export settings. Every one of those is a small detour into another app or another tutorial.

ChatGPT does not get faster at dragging clips on a timeline. It skips the timeline.

A promo video in 10 minutes with ChatGPT instead of an editor

  • Your brand, not a template’s. The video uses your colors, whether or not you have a website, so it looks like your business.
  • Captions are built in. Most feed video is watched without sound, so every line is on screen and readable over any shot.
  • You approve before anything renders. Nothing is made until you have seen the plan and said yes, so fixes take seconds, not re-renders.
  • One brief, several formats. The same video comes out as 9:16 for Reels and 16:9 for YouTube or a website header.
  • Free, licensed footage. Pexels clips are free for ads with no attribution required.

Why asking ChatGPT to generate a promo video is not enough

The obvious move is to type “make me a promo video for my bakery” and wait. It does not work.

OpenAI closed the Sora app in April 2026, so there is no text-to-video button in ChatGPT to press. What comes back is a script, or a video of stock scenes that look like nobody’s business in particular.

And a loose request gets a loose result even when ChatGPT does edit: captions in default white over a white sky, the logo under the like button, a 40-second cut for a 15-second slot, and a file your ad account rejects. The finding covers the setup that avoids all of that.
